Dusty comes out strong for the last leg of the race, confronting Ripslinger before he takes flight. “We designed this shot to be highly dramatic, with backlighting, crisp silhouettes, and such sharp focus that you can see the heat coming out of their engines, like two boxers going toe-to-toe,” explains Planes art director Ryan Carlson. Dusty even warns Ripslinger with a “check six”—a naval term for “watch your back”—that suggests that Dusty has taken Skipper’s teachings to heart, even if his heart has been broken by finding out the truth behind Skipper’s story.

A classic dogfight sequence takes place over Dead Stick Desert, a location that covers more than one hundred square kilometers and features a multitude of pinnacles and canyons to make for an exciting obstacle course. The complexity of the aerial combat actually informed the building of the set, courtesy of the expertise of the pre-visualization team. Play with light and shadow enhances the drama with great contrast, and there are also subtle shapes in the rock that suggest crashed airplanes—“not too graphic to be macabre, but enough to suggest that this is a dangerous environment,” adds Carlson.
